Kyokoma Jakkyu – Japanese spinning tops artisan

Mr. Yoshiyuki Nakamura is an artisan creating kyo-koma – traditional Japanese spinning tops, Kyoto style. Top were introduced to Japan in the Asuka period.

Originally, it was introduced as a tool for fortune-telling, but it has spread as a plaything and an ornament, and there are tops with different designs all over Japan. Among them, “Kyo koma” which is said to have been developed by women in the Azuchi-Momoyama period, is the only one made in Japan by wrapping cloth or thread around a bamboo stem. You will be soothed by the cute round figure.
